User names

Some people say you have to be careful on the Internet. I have often used my real names, address, phone numbers, bank details etc. People are using funny usernames on the Internet. Why?

If you are on an e-mail list, forum or blog as a real person, how can you expect any friendship or respect if you use a name you don’t use face to face?

Most people are careful to not leave as many details floating around as I do, but what is the danger? I guess someone could come to my house, bashed me, and take the item they saw on ebay.

Women are often more afraid of strangers coming to their house. Is this justified?

What are your thoughts, why do you have a different user name?
Should I remove my details from the Internet?

Even if I tell you it's a bad idea will you listen?

From a male, I would expect logical reasoning. If it is a bad thing, then I look like a fool. Give it to me either way.

It is fine to use your own name, I think, but posting your address or phone number in a way that is easily accessible to the whole world seems very foolish. I don't see what the point of posting these details is, either. Why would people need your home address or phone number?

Previously I was running a business, and had my address and all details on my webpage. I don't see this as foolish.

Some people that only run a mail-order business have a P.O. Box to avoid confrontation. (They are scared).

I already know people say it "seams" foolish to have your details up. But why?

If it was for business purposes, at least you had a good reason :).

However, prudent rather than "scared" might be a better word for those who use a P.O. Box to run a business. Unless people need to come to your home (which I imagine they may have with mechanical work), there is no need to give your home details. It "seems" foolish because people are sinful, and it is best to be careful about giving them information they could use to harass or harm you.

However, I am thinking about this partly in terms of my family. I post pictures of my niece on my website, and she is often at our house. Her parents were particularly concerned that I did not mention the exact location where I live. I agree with them, because this precaution eliminates any potential negative consequences of having an internet presence.

P.S. since I'm a woman, I probably shouldn't have bothered commenting since I take it I cannot be expected to be logical? :) ?

I guess that is a reason if you have pics of your niece.

Please forgive me sounding negative on this. I have never had trouble from the internet that I couldn't deal with.

If you have any questions about the real Mike Jolly I could probably help. He thinks he knows everything about me so it's only fair.

Mikes residential address is on his blog.

i also find fake names a bit weird and it's like people are being unecessarily shy or coy or cautious.

I suppose our information is collected in various ways by various people who want to market stuff to us. I find the ads next my emails in gmail a bit spooky. It's like someone is reading my emails to work out something they can sell to me.

I actually find guys more often annoying for being overly cautious, seeing as they have less reason to be. e.g. why do some men hesitate to pick up hitchhikers in case they are dodgy?

Although i hate the fact, but women are more vulernable due to usually being physically weaker. So this probably leads to be less advertising of ones personal details.

Jonny, this was my first visit to your blog!

Thanks for that yvonne. I know girls are weak. But imagine how pissed off you would have to get a man to make him look you up, (if not in the phone book) come over and hit you. You would have to say or do some fairly hurtfull things.

I found this guy

has some good advice about using blogs.
