10km

I have paid my fee for the Burnie Ten and so have been doing some training in the last few weeks. This mainly includes going for a run, some other sport, eating well, and observing my weight. Tonight was my first 10km run. Without giving too much away, generally speaking I am as fit as I need to be at this time. Who else is doing this?

I can picture you doing this to "the Eye of the Tiger", getting a little bit better each time. How about running up sandunes bare-foot?

The other day I did some stretches in bed before getting up. That's about it.

I run up slight gradients to get my lungs working, which makes me easily fit enough to run a flat course.

I didn't even think of bringing music. Maybe I could play the radio on my phone. I could use my phone to request that song at the same time.

The problem is, how do I run faster? My legs get sore.

How do you run faster? It all depends at what stage you are. Some shorter rep work is generally useful.

Longer reps work well too.

So if you have a stop watch and a reasonably uninterrupted course, try two minutes at an increased intensity, then five minutes at a slower speed than you'd normally run as recovery, and repeat that set maybe 4-5 times.

If you really want that increase in speed, interval sprint training might help, so shorten your two minutes to 15seconds to 30 seconds, and then you need to be sprinting that. Then have maybe a minute recovery.

As far as sore legs go, vary the surface that you're running, make sure you have a good pair of shoes, nasty down hill running is pretty bad too.

Anyway, hopefully I'll see you before Burnie.

Thanks. Sprints have helped me in the past. I will try some of them shortly.

Also, it seams training time is limited as I have to let my knees and legs recover. Maybe it would be better to run on grass or ride a bike every other day.

How's the weight going - are you approaching your spring weight? And bmi coming down still?

Yes yes. I have a graph of my weight. The dips and peaks can all be explained by the food that was given to me.

Loosing 1kg per week on average, although weight can vary 1.5kg during a day. And I could loose 10kg in a week, but this would be sacrificing energy and comfort levels (as well as being prone to getting sick, loosing muscle mass etc).

It scares me how seriously you're taking this!

I have miscalculated. It seams my 10km run was actually 9.2km. I'm not as fit as I thought. Surely I am going to struggle in the Burnie Ten, but I think they would have an ambulance there.
