I had the radio on tonight on 106.5FM and some people were talking who sounded like they were from Christines part of the world. It was probably Focus on the Family. Anyway, it sounded like an American couple had everything sorted and had written a book about that, and had this story to add:
A girl from their church was engaged to a nice man and everything seamed good except she had one concern, and she went to the older lady for advice. "I'm afraid he might turn out to be emotionally shallow". !!! Also her fiance was a race car driver. (Oh, we get the picture now right?) The older woman had just the right advice.
"Go into the garage with him and ask him about all the engine parts he is tinkering with. Whatever words he says like 'rod' or 'piston' etc, repeat those words back to him".
She did just that, and without knowing what she was saying she repeated all the car words he was saying back to him. And you know what? The man got up from underneath his car and said he was touched. No one else had had such a interest in what he did, or had made the effort to talk about it. She had entered his world! From that time onwards she loved the garage because she could talk to her man and they could communicate!
Oh dear, my eyelids are fluttering with the thought and tears are coming to the corner of my eye. I guess the story is in the telling. Not relivent to me at all, but I have to councel a number of couples and it maybe a good story to pull out oneday. You know, talk to someones wife in the kitchen oneday and encorage her to venture out to her husband in the workshop for some intimate communication. "Spanner, piston, con-rod". Yeah, that's man talk... and definitely not shallow!
